Taxes, Fees, and Surcharges

Listed under each service on your bill, you’ll see that we collect a variety of taxes, fees and surcharges. Some of these charges appear under the heading “Taxes, Fees and Surcharges” on your bill, while others may appear under the headings “Recurring Charges” or “Related Monthly Charges.”

Taxes are imposed by federal, state, local, and municipal governments and vary based on where you live, the services you receive, and the amount you pay for those services. Certain surcharges, such as mandated 911 surcharges, also fall under this category. We’re required to bill you directly for those charges on behalf of the relevant authority.

Similarly, assessments are billed on behalf of the government and collected through customer fees. The Federal Universal Service Fund surcharge is an example of one of those fees, where the amount is a percentage of the bill.

There are a number of taxes, fees and surcharges, each of which serves a specific purpose. For detailed information on specific charges, search for it by name in the form above, or select from the list provided on the right.
Fees and surcharges, charged by ABSi Telecom, are spent on a number of critical needs, such as building and maintaining the ABSi Telecom High Speed Internet broadband network as well as the costs of expanding network capacity. Fees such as the Access Recovery Charge are authorized by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), while other fees may be used by ABSi Telecom to defray the cost of providing a particular service. You can get detailed information on these fees and surcharges by searching for them by name using the search form above.

They’re listed on your bill
Taxes, fees, and surcharges are listed under each of your ABSi Telecom services in the “Details” section of your bill. If you have multiple products, you will see a distinct section for taxes, fees and surcharges for each product, and for each service within that product, when applicable. Federal, state and local laws dictate which products and services are assessed some of these charges, so you may see a charge with the same name appear on your bill more than one time, because it’s being assessed against different services.

A note about tax, fee, and surcharge amounts
Many taxes, fees, and surcharges come in the form of a predictable, flat monthly rate. You may notice, however, that the amount applied for others can vary month to month. There are a few reasons that this happens:

Rates can increase or decrease based on federal, state and local government assessments.
If the pre-tax amount of a service varies monthly because of usage (for example, long distance charges), then the taxes, fees, and surcharges will vary as well, as they’re based on a percentage of the amount.
If you’ve recently moved to a different taxing jurisdiction then your taxes will be based on the rates for your new address.
